Bigg Design and Fun Makes Good have collaborated with Sustrans, the local community and Perth & Kinross Council to invigorate a previously run-down site with sculpture, art and planting, creating a new focal point for the neighbourhood and encouraging active travel across Perth & Kinross.
Located on the National Cycle Network, the derelict site was previously an empty space of broken asphalt, mud and litter, yet occupied a prominent position opposite the school at the meeting of key streets. Confusing for visitors, the cycle path stopped before the site and then started again on the opposite side of the road, making it difficult to navigate.
Following a series of community consultations, Sustrans’ design of the new cycle path and shapely planters radically improves the layout of the space, whilst Bigg Design x Fun Makes Good’s way-finding sculpture creates a joyous focal point and means of orientation.
Located on the National Cycle Network, the sculpture draws on the aesthetics of road signage and ground markings, reinventing them to create a colourful and engaging public space. A circle of posts support double-sided artworks symbolising local landmarks and places of interest, whilst a hand-painted ground mural acts as a ‘compass’ to point visitors in their direction.
The innovative use of custom road signs, industry standard poles and playground paint afforded a large, high-impact and crucially budget-friendly sculpture for the space that would have been otherwise impossible with traditional sculptural techniques.
A hand-painted ground ‘mural’ borrows the visual language of road markings to create a bold and eye-catching display, drawing visitors in and creating a playful space to explore.
